InSight Surgical Technologies Wins Phase II SBIR Grant to Develop Next-Generation Surgical Navigation Systems

Dartmouth startup InSight Surgical Technologies (IST) has been awarded a $2 million Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the NIH to advance its next-generation surgical navigation technology. Founded by Dartmouth engineering, medical, and business faculty, IST is developing an integrated platform that combines real-time image updating with quantitative fluorescence imaging to help surgeons more accurately identify and remove tumors.

Initially focused on brain surgery, the technology addresses a longstanding challenge in surgical navigation: patient tissues can shift during an operation, making preoperative images less accurate as surgery progresses. IST’s system is designed to provide surgeons with updated, on-demand guidance during procedures while fluorescence imaging helps identify tumor tissue at the microscopic level. The company’s longer-term goal is to develop an autonomous, continuously updated navigation system that can improve surgical precision and make high-quality, image-guided cancer surgery more broadly accessible.
